It often happens that you’ll be talking with an adult and the subject of playing an instrument comes up. If they’re not a professional musician, more often than not you’ll hear them lament the fact that they gave up playing when they were a kid and never went as far with the instrument as they would have liked. ‘If only my parents would have kept making me do it I would be able to play something!’
Most of us know that it’s hard as a kid to practice and to hold an interest in something that is difficult and doesn’t guarantee immediate results. But I often tell those same people who lament their (or their parent’s) lack of persistence that it’s never too late to learn!
With the awareness of having gone through some of life’s challenges and having success elsewhere people realize that they could actually succeed at learning an instrument and with hard work and good instruction actually get pretty good.
Practice might not always make perfect but it certainly brings you closer to your goals. With the help of a good quality instrument (and today there are loads out there that aren’t too expensive – the Yamaha NPV60 or Yamaha NPV80, for example) you’ll be on your way.
And so whether your young or old and goal is to play one of your favorite songs, play duets with a friend, or simply have some musically creative time to yourself, it’s never too late and there’s no time like the present!
